ROME, Italy — 22 new cardinals were appointed by the pope at the Vatican on Saturday, with his choices for the lofty role likely to influence who will be appointed as his successor.

Last month, the Vatican named the new cardinals and officially appointed them in a special ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica. U.S top catholic official, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, and Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien of Baltimore were among those elevated to the College of Cardinals.
